Final Project (EUPMT): Character Design
I did some drawings by hand then scanned and painted them in Photoshop, and others were directly created in Photoshop by using a digital tablet.

Beauty and the Beast, proportions

And these are the secondary characters, Beauty's father and sisters.

Final Project (EUPMT): Story variations and navigation plan
For the interactive version I had to write new endings. Apart from the classical one, I included two realistic ones, an ironic and a protest one, all invented by me.
Keeping this structure in mind I had to plan the navigation though the screens, the elements needed to move along the pages and the multimedia they would contain, in order to start creating them and giving form to the project in Flash.
Final Project (EUPMT): Selecting the story
While I was re-reading the story about “The Beauty and the Beast” I remembered many details I had forgotten, like the presents the daughters ask their father to bring them or the ring that magically brings Beauty back home. All this reminded me about my childhood and the feelings the original story aroused in me, so I made up my mind and chose that tale. I gathered information about the original version by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve (1695-1755) and about the shortened revision written by the French aristocrat Jean-Marie Le Prince du Beaumont (1711-1780), whose version has remained as the most-known.
I decided to adapt a bit the story to the present days and conceptions, so I gave Beauty a more active role: she’s the one that decides to go to the Beast’s castle in her father’s place, she picks the rose from the Beast’s garden and accepts the consequences of her own deeds. The character from the original version represented pity, self-sacrifice and obedience. I wanted her to be self-confident and go-ahead, after nowadays western women.
Final Project (EUPMT): Aim
I must underline the fact that a complete version of this kind of product with commercial or educative purposes would need a big team of professionals working on it for a longer period. Keeping this in mind, my project should be approached as a prototype, a small-scale application that would need further development.
Final Project (EUPMT)
As my final project for the “Graduat en Mitjans Audiovisuals” at my university in Mataró (Catalunya, Spain), I created an interactive multimedia application for CD-ROM. The following posts will talk about that project and its creation process.
Multimedia applications consist of several media (audio, image, animation, text and video) that transmit some information. The higher the quality of these elements, the richer the application. But another important characteristic of these applications is the level of interactivity they offer to the user.
Interactivity is the dialogue between the user and the computer. The former must be able not to just sit and receive the information from the screen but to influence the application and to determine its behaviour.
My project took a traditional tale as a narrative basis to offer different visions of its content. Then presented them to the user as the opportunity to choose from different endings. Since the book, the classical medium for stories, had been exchanged for an up-to-date blend of multimedia elements, so should the story. That way, the tale tries to reflect a modern vision of women and couple relationships while trying to explain each ending with a different mood. The software used was Flash 8, to create the basic interface of the application, and the ActionScript code, Nuendo 3, for the voice-overs and other sounds' edition, and Photohop CS2 for the drawings, which I did by using a digital tablet.
