Compositing and VFX reel

Here's a video where I put together some of the compositing I did for "Dr W" TV series by Magoproduction:

Combate

Animations

Here's a short video I've put together with some clips from my university work and other stuff I've done in my spare time.
I'm still unsure whether to focus on 3D animation or try to improve my drawing style and stick with 2D. I like both and I'm reluctant to give up either of them, but I'm aware that in order to become proficient in a specific area it's better to dedicate one's full attention to it, or you risk becoming a jack of all trades and master of non.
For now, I've decided to focus on 3D for a while, which places me in another dilemma: modelling or animating? I'm pretty sure I'm not so much into rendering or composing, so I'll try a bit of the former ones before making up my mind.

Miscellanea II

Some drawings I've made in my free time over the last years :)

Life drawing

These are some of the drawings I did last year during a series of life drawing sessions at Wrexham's library while I was studying at Glyndwr.
My technique isn't very accurate, I know, and I'd like to be able to improve the way I use shading not to depend so much on lines, but I haven't really had a proper artistic education and I find this difficult.

Opening

Last month, after discussing it with my tutor, we've decided that it'd be better for me to animate something shorter and thorough, because I'm just starting to learn to use Maya and it's a long and difficult process and time's tight. Besides, the aim of my project is to work on blending two characters created with different techniques and to make them interact in a credible way. So I must focus on the technical part more than anything and let the sisters personalities move along with the process.

That's why I've decided to make a short opening sequence for a hypothetical series starring the two sisters. This is the storyboard I've created for it. I still need to decide how it's going to end and I may amend some parts, but it will probably look something like this.

Second animatic

After testing different ideas for the chosen sequence, this is the definitive animatic I created. I was quite happy with it because it let me show Thelma and Tilda's characters and at the same time the abilities that made them different.

Ideas for the short film

Here are two of the sequences I imagined for the twins. The first one focused on showing their different personalities and their relationship: whilst Thelma gets dressed and combed in a wee while, Tilda's yet combing her hair thoroughly; Thelma prepares both her and Tilda's breakfast and when she's finished Tilda just arrives and intends to read peacefully despite her sister's impacient stare. But Thelma's anger doesn't last long, because Tilda knows how to make her forgive her.

The second option focused on their different abilities as a 2d and a 3d character. Tilda, because she's drawn, can be erased with a rubber. Thelma's axis can be scaled, translated or rotated, and she can create 3d objects. Her personalities were also shown, which is the reason why I was about to choose this sequence for the short film. Thelma impatiently hurries her sister and checks the cinema timetable, whilst Tilda spends a lot of time deciding which clothes to wear.

Birthday present to dad

The DVD present was commissioned to my sister and I after we had created another animated short film as a birthday present for our father, which can be seen here. The stop-motion animation was mainly done by my sister Lucía :-) and together we wrote the texts, recorded the voice-overs and edited the soundtrack.

Final Project (EUPMT): Feedback

After the project's assessment I was contacted by two local TV channels from the Maresme region to interview me in relation to my final project, which had been marked 10, an article was published in Mataró's local online newspaper, Capgròs, and Ràdio 4, from RNE, phoned me for another interview some days later.
The recording of the former has been very kindly sent to me by Maiola, who interviewed me, and I want to thank her, not just for this favour but for the interview, which was the one I felt more comfortable at.

Final Project (EUPMT): Character Design

My initial idea was to create a geometric style, simple and original, specially for the characters, but I finally chose to draw them in a style I was already used to, influenced by the Japanese comic. Between the several existing styles in this type of comic I decided to use the so-called “shonen”, appearing in comic-books for boys, instead of the “shojo” comic-book style, aimed at girls, in which designs are more stylized and exaggerated. Thus, Beauty doesn’t have big eyes nor a thin constitution, but a rounded face and real-size eyes. Regarding the Beast, he’s got a strong constitution that makes him different from shojo’s usually slender and thin male characters.

I did some drawings by hand then scanned and painted them in Photoshop, and others were directly created in Photoshop by using a digital tablet.

These are the designs of the main characters:

And these are the secondary characters, Beauty's father and sisters.
